Finishes

Honed or polished?
A closer look.

Two different ways to experience the same natural stone.

Marble vanity and wall in a warm bathroom interior

The finish changes how you experience a marble surface. The same stone can feel formal and luminous in one finish, and quiet and restrained in another. It is worth comparing the alternatives with your room's light and materials before choosing.

What does polished marble look like?

A polished surface reflects light and emphasises the colour and movement in the stone. In a bright interior, that reflection can become part of the room's atmosphere. On a feature wall or vanity, the surface can make the veining feel more pronounced.

Look at the sample from different angles rather than only directly above it. What you see across the surface is part of the finish, especially beside windows and light fittings.

What does honed marble look like?

Honed marble has a matte or satin appearance with less reflection. It often suits rooms where you want the stone to feel softer alongside timber, fabric or muted cabinetry. The veins remain visible, but the experience of light on the surface changes.

Ask to compare the available finishes on the same material. Comparing two different marbles can make it difficult to separate a colour preference from a finish preference.

Choose for the exact location.

A wall, a worktop and a floor place different demands on stone. The appropriate finish depends on the actual material and the intended use. In wet locations, do not treat the word 'honed' as a guarantee of slip resistance: the surface and the complete design need to be assessed.

For bathroom floors, discuss drainage, cleaning and the installation system as well as appearance. For a vanity, look at the basin layout, taps and the nearby wall finishes.

Plan a consistent composition.

The same finish does not have to be used everywhere. A softer floor and a more reflective wall can create an interesting contrast. What matters is that the decision feels deliberate, with transitions and related details considered together.

Place your samples beside the timber, metal and paint choices. A simple collection of those materials can tell you more than a single close-up photograph.

Make care part of the decision.

Ask what cleaning routine and protection the selected marble requires. Finish is one part of the choice; the way the space is used is another. A good selection conversation considers both.
